Alison Lee, Healthcare Assistant

  • Department: Independent Living Hubs
  • Joined First City: November 2022
  • Previous Employment: Hairdresser, I am still hairdressing alongside First City, I've been a hairdresser since the age of 14, but was ready for a new challenge, so working for First City is a second job for me.

1. What excites you about working in healthcare?

I knew I had a passion for care and I have been working on the edge of care for 14 years as the hairdresser at a residential setting (one of the settings that First City provide care for). I had been thinking for a long time that I would like to be a carer, so I had an interview after 35 years and got the job...I love helping people and making them happy.

2. How did you find the induction training with First City?

I really enjoyed the induction training, especially the practical elements as I am definitely more of a hands-on person. I'm not going to lie, I wa very scared to be back in the classroom, but proud of myself at the same time for doing it. The trainers were lovely and made you feel at ease. I wrote lots and lots of notes that I could look back in and put into practice.

If I'm honest, I don't think anything prepares you for your shadow shift, the training was great, but you learn more on the job, I asked lots of questions and wrote lots of notes to help me along the way.

3. How has your introduction to the role been?

I have learnt there is more to care than anyone thinks. It's a tough, but very rewarding job. I have loved working as part of a team and learning from other, more experienced carers. I took feedback on board and put it into practice.

4. Thinking about the start of your journey working for First City, how would you describe the company?

The company is very busy, but there is always someone there at the end of the phone, to help and advise you and to try and answer any query you might have. I feel I have support from a team behind me.

5. Do you have any other comments you would like to share?

I have enjoyed my journey with First City so far, I have loved working as part of a team and learning a new skill at my age. I feel I have become more confident as the months have gone by, and I am definitely taking on more of a lead role in double ups, and I am able to now pass on my knowledge and experience to new team members when they start their journey with First City.

We look forward to speaking with Alison again in a few months time to see how their journey with First City is progressing.
